i nearly jumped out of my skin

we've had some amazing storms this spring already, but this week was a doozi. i guess most folk saw how trashed parts of Brisbane got (i however missed this news and wondered why everyone was calling to check we were ok :o). we were ok, just soaked. and last night we had absolutely amazingly cracking thunder right over the house so that the windows shook and the lights flickered. i ran for the torch and mobile phone, and checked the kids. they, of course, slept on peacefully. the thunder rolled around and the sky was lit by lightening for the next 4 hours. amazing.

today the sun came out and the washing dried in about an hour, it was intense

this is what i feel like doing

i made this cushion/dolly for miss s when she turned 3 a few months ago. the other side is a smiling face. i find it handy for lying down with her in bed - she doesn't like to share her own pillow.

this week i am emaling off my first subject to TAFE. i'm nervous about it because i don't know what they expect. i hope i haven't waffled too much.............

this morning was prep orientation. and mr h has school uniforms ready in his cupboard. weird to go to a school surrounded by fields, cows, a few roads and open gates. compared to the lock-in at kindy it's a little disconcerting. however i'm sure the sunflower yellow surf hat that the preps wear will make them easy to spot and drag back!

i wish i'd concentrated more in maths

sewing - as usual i'm all gung-ho and "i won't need to measure this" and "that looks great, i'm sure i could do that" and 9 times out of 10 it's fine. but patchwork needs a bit more thought - and maths.
mmmm didn't work out how many hexagons i'd need (is that what they call the five-sided thing out of the shape-o, which is where i get all my sewing, cookie and scone shapes from). so i consulted fungus, he proceeded to build a scale model out of paper and sticky tape to demonstrate how many little shape thingys i'd need. i started to doze off (it was after 11pm last night) and he suggested a square based triangle would be easier for me. so i did that.

only 150 to go

joking

i think i'll do a dozen for the kids who visit at xmas, i thought they could choose one off the tree and take it home. like i've got a xmas tree. this will be our first year for having a xmas tree and i've got the decorations, the lights, the ideas, the enthusiasm, just no tree or anywhere to put one. oh well, it's weeks away isn't it?

halloween - then the slippery sweetie slope to xmas

i've never really done halloween, not as a kid myself and not as parent. the last few years there'd be kids pounding on the door at dusk in their scary costumes, already laden down with buckets of lollies, and i'd have nothing to offer them except dates, or maybe some sultanas!!?? ummmm, i don't think so. then last year our kids really loved seeing the costumes and leaping out at the trick-or-treaters and "raarring" them. i still forgot to buy any lollies tho. but i promised the kids that next year we'd dress up and join in.

and they never forgot it, even tho they were then only 2 and 3yrs old. it's been a topic of conversation all year.

so this year i bought the lollies (vegetarian toffees from aldi) and we put together costumes with $2 shop masks, pillowslips and cloth nappies. and then i had the awful feeling that we wouldn't get any trick-or-treaters because of my past offerings of sultanas.

so fungus took them out onto the streets visiting a few neighbours and they had a great time. eaten alive by mossies, ate more lollies than they'd ever seen before, saw all the big kids dressed up and dropped in on 2 parties in our street.

and now they ask for lollies every day. no tantrums, just polite enquiries
"mummy, do you think we might have some halloween lollies soon?"
me "umm, no i dont think so" or "daddy ate them"
but now it's only 7 weeks to xmas and the lollies and chocs will start again. oh well, i ate my share of fruit tingles, jellybeans, jubes, licorice, redskins, spearmint leaves and little choccy santas and it didn't harm me toooooo much. i guess.

happy sliding towards xmas everyone!
